Mount Roland
The backdrop to the property and the reason the light changes all day. Walking tracks run from gentle lakeside strolls to the Triple Top Mountain Run.
How far is everything, really?
Almost everything here is inside the hour, and most of it a good deal closer. Stanley is the one long day out.
Approximate drive times from the retreat. The full list, if you like to plan.
Close to the national park, without staying inside it.
Eagles Nest Retreat is one of the closest luxury places to stay near Cradle Mountain while still giving you privacy, space and quiet. Just under an hour from the park, you can spend the day on Dove Lake, Marion’s Lookout, Crater Lake and the trails through Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park.
Then come back to your own villa, your own spa bath and your own view — wilderness and quiet in the same holiday, rather than a bed in a busy tourism precinct.

The region gives you more than the park itself.
Worth leaving the property for.

55Minutes
Dove Lake, Marion’s Lookout, Crater Lake and the tracks through the national park. Spend the day, come back to your own bath.
7Minutes
The Town of Murals. An outdoor gallery painted across the buildings, plus cafés, working artists and the International Mural Fest.
20Minutes
Eight mazes and the Village of Lower Crackpot. Odd, cheerful, and the easiest win of the trip if you have children with you.

20Minutes
Flat water under the hills, an international rowing course and picnic grounds. Lake Cethana is a little further along the same road.
30Minutes
Devils, quolls and wombats at one of Tasmania’s longest-running sanctuaries. Keeper talks run through the day.

35Minutes
Limestone chambers and glow-worms under the Great Western Tiers. Leven Canyon is 45 minutes the other way.
The town that painted itself.
Seven minutes down the road, Sheffield turned its walls into an outdoor gallery and became known internationally as the Town of Murals. History, culture and local stories are painted across the buildings, and you can spend a morning wandering the streets, ducking into galleries and meeting the artists who made them.
For most guests it stops being a stop on the way to Cradle Mountain and becomes its own reason to go.

The mountain you wake up to.
Go far enough up and it pays you back with some of the best views in the state.
Mount Roland is one of Tasmania’s most recognisable ranges, home of the Triple Top Mountain Run, and the backdrop to everything here. The walking runs the full range — gentle nature trails, lakeside strolls, lookouts across the Kentish region, and harder hikes and trail runs for people who want them.

Sitting between Launceston, Cradle Mountain and the North West Coast, the property works better as a base than as a single night on an itinerary.
Most guests arriving on the Spirit of Tasmania stay several days and drive out from here — which means one set of bags, one bed, and no repacking every morning.
